We offer information on pedal powered boats (PPBs), also known as HPBs (human powered boats), watercycles, or waterbikes.
Test trials, comparisons and reviews of boats
are available. The sport of pedal boating has
produced watercraft that are surprisingly easy to use, efficient and clearly environmentally friendly. For touring, racing, adventuring, nature trips or exercise, pedal boats are a fun and safe way to pedal to a healthier you, that you control to go lazily or speedy depending on your effort.
Some boats are even being enhanced with sail
or now are equipped with electric motors as an option or are adaptable
for the disabled.
They are used for quiet transportation on lakes, rivers, or open sea. Pedal powered boats vary in design from pedal boards, kayaks, catamarans, or inflatable boats to deep draft monohulls.
Prices range from $1000 to $4000 US.
Since 1986, I've
been involved with pedal powered boats crusading for their
development and marketing. As a former officer of the Human Powered
Vehicle Association I've helped those interested in finding out more
about manufactured boats, racing boats, and the oceanic expeditions
using pedal powered boats.
Jason
Lewis, from Great Britain, completed the first human powered
circumnavigation of the Earth on October 6, 2007 returning to Greenwich
where he and Steve Smith departed on bikes 13 years before. An ocean
going pedal boat, ‘Moksha’, was used to cross the Atlantic and Pacific
Oceans and the Arabian Sea. The expedition was originally called Pedal
for the Planet but was changed to Expedition 360. Several other human
power expeditions, challenges or record breaking attempts are in
progress or being planned. Please check the Web links below for current
news.
